Companies flocking to join the Oslo Børs marketplaces

A record number of companies have been admitted to the Oslo Børs marketplaces in the first six months of 2018. The amount of new equity raised by these companies is also at an historically high level, while their combined market capitalisations is a record high.

Shelf Drilling was admitted to listing on Oslo Børs today, and last Friday Star Bulk Carriers was approved for listing. The high level of activity in the primary market in the first six months of this year follows on from last year, which was a record year for issues at Oslo Børs.

  • Not since 2007 have more companies been admitted to Oslo Børs’ marketplaces in the first six months of a year – see the figure below. If one includes Shelf Drilling and Star Bulk Carriers as well, 13 new companies have been admitted to the Oslo Børs marketplaces so far this year.
  • The companies admitted so far this year have raised a total of NOK 11.8 billion in new equity through share issues.
  • The combined market capitalisations of the newly admitted companies on their first day of listing totals NOK 33.5, which is the highest since 2007.

A number of the new companies are among the largest and best in their industries globally. Shelf Drilling, for example, is one of the largest jack-up contractors in the shallow water segment, while Star Bulk Carriers is one of the world’s largest dry bulk shipping companies. Elkem, another company admitted to listing in the first six months of 2018, is a world leader in the environmentally friendly production of silicon-based metals and materials.

Five of the companies that have joined an Oslo Børs marketplace this year have been admitted to listing on Oslo Børs, while eight have been admitted to trading on Merkur Market. Since Merkur Market was launched in 2016, an impressive 27 companies have been admitted to trading on this marketplace. Five companies have also so far this year joined the NOTC list of unlisted companies.

As well as numerous companies being admitted to an Oslo Børs marketplace, an unusually large number have transferred between Oslo Børs’ marketplaces, with companies progressing from both Oslo Axess and Merkur Market. Some companies have also moved from the NOTC list to an Oslo Børs marketplace, such as Shelf Drilling.
